Wine Ratings

I've so far resisted giving wines I've tasted any kind of score, but recently when typing up all my tasting notes I realised that having a short-hand reference would actually be a good idea. I'm not a fan of the 100-point system as it's widely misunderstood and not that helpful. And although I prefer the French 20-point system, the fact that all scores are between 10 and 20 means it's also misleading. So I came up with my own scoring system and here it is:

✪✪✪✪✪✪✪ an indisputably outstanding wine: balanced, deep, long, complex, ageworthy
✪✪✪✪✪✪ an extremely good wine: balanced with high levels of complexity
✪✪✪✪✪ a high quality wine: balanced, with a very good complexity
✪✪✪✪ a good wine: of interest, with some complexity, but lacking overall depth
✪✪✪ an approachable wine: lacks finesse or complexity
✪✪ a poor wine: tastes like wine but is (hopefully) forgettable
✪ a very bad wine: one with no redeeming features
